Yesterday at the festival I had a bit of confrontation with volunteers for Coastal Jazz about taking pictures of the free concerts that they give on the streets of Gastown. They claim they have copyright on any photograph taken of performers and can confiscate your cameras.

I maintained that they were on very slippery legal grounds because the venues are on public streets and short of having physical confrontations between the public and their "rent a thug"security personnel I didn't see how they make their threat stick. I told them that they could try to confiscate my cameras if they wanted them to become part of their bridge work and if they laid hands on me in any way they would be charged with assault. Hardly the sort of public persona Coastal Jazz would seek to project to a public where everyone has a camera if they have a phone, copyright be damned. They would have copyright in a paid concert in the confines of a club or a stadium and could enforce their rights by not permitting anyone with a camera or phone from being admitted to the venue, again hardly the image they would want to project to the public.

The public concerts are very well received and the musicians  are laid back and accessible. The performances are world class and aside from this minor confrontation a good time was had by all.

Will be meeting Ron "H" for a lunch and concert at Tom Lee's at which I will leave my cameras in their bag and just enjoy the concert. The Amanda Tosoff Quartet will be playing.

Ciao, JWL
