Lunch today with old friend Ron "H" at the flying Swan. I walked over going though the uptown and crossing the Burrard Bridge. It's about three miles one way and actually is the long way to get there. I started early because I wanted to have a coffee and write three pages in my hand written journal before I met Ron.
My old Starbucks at Howe and Helmechen was along the route and the power was still off for most of the places along Water Street after the transformer fire below the manhole cover on Richards Street yesterday that knocked out power to most of the uptown area, so I had my coffee there.
There have been changes at the old coffee spot, my good friend Steve has been promoted to District manager so there is a new store manager. Young Michael, the kid from Northern Ireland and and now the assistant manager at the Howe Street store, was telling me that there were a lot of corporate moves amongst the usual customers because of lease costs going up due to city tax increases so the tenants are voting with their feet and moving out of the uptown area to the low rent areas like Gastown. Who da thunk it? Their lease relief will be short lived because with all the infrastructure upgrading going on down here we can expect hefty tax increases also.
Ron laid some interesting sides for me to upload to my iTunes. Miles Davis, Porgy and Bess, and Art Pepper meets The Rhythm Section which I'm listening to right now.
The picture of the girl in white was taken through the window at Howe Street and although I couldn't hear her she talked non stop for what seemed like an awful long time. I see now from the picture that I took, she was being interviewed possibly for some kind of job.
Got back to my place and had a shower to get the road dust off me and then crashed for a nap and then got up and worked on my blog. I've just finished re reading GRANTA 10 Travel writing and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time I read it. If you see it in your local used book store be sure to pick it up.
La Dolce Vita!
