OBLIVIOUS

He was screaming in the street
his right sole flapping on his feet.
The tourists looked away
they didn't want to ruin their holiday.
I was as guilty as the rest
and thought only of what was the best
for me.
Then when my conscience kicked me in the butt
and I approached him
and asked if I could help
and only elicited another screeching yelp.
He looked at me with terror in his eyes,
and shrank from me in fear
and screamed again
and eluded my touch after many tries.
I looked around
and noticed the studied indifference
as they raised their cameras
to get the heartrending scene
as if we were something quite strange and obscene
and in my head
rang something starkly obvious
it was as if this wasn't real
and they could hide their shame
and be
oblivious.

My mind is racing, ever been in the situation? Has he been turfed out of the Shelter after dinner & a bed for the night? Was the meal too rich for his constitution, after days of scraps or nothing? Has he had days of remembering nothing at all, then suddenly he is a child again, been rejected by his mother, did he have a mother to love him..... my mind is imagining, still his pain goes on and his anger, screaming at all and everyone. He wears a coat in your summer.. . Is this to happen to all of us as we age & more and more youth skittle about on cycles, their fat bums & snorts of superior ......
